We are now safely past the closure point at bridge 59a, but are hemmed in by the canal also being shut just north of our marina at Aston. We can turn down the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal at Great Hayward, but being somewhat hemmed in probably won't travel very far
This morning Vera has a bit of a lie in, and it's a relaxed start today. With the canal closed there is no one else moving
As soon as I set off we are in the short Armitage tunnel, and then a couple of miles into Rugeley. The weather has turned very mild, with a blustery headwind
We are greeted by this rather handsome swan
We have a wander around Rugeley, coming across this rather splendid bird feeder / bird house in someone's front garden. More like a bird's town hall. The town itself is very quiet, and we look around pondering whether to moor overnight here. However the micro pub I really wanted to visit, the Rusty Barrel, is closed on a Monday so after picking up supplies we move on.
Canalside, Rugeley has lots to see, like this beached boat that seems to have become a storage shed
The mannequins are getting ready for remembrance Sunday
It's a pleasant cruise beside the Trent as we race against the setting sun. A good view of a kingfisher perched on a fence at Little Hayward, flitting off just before I can get a photo
Vera steering into the first and last lock of the day
The fire is lit, and Vera rustles up a very tasty corned beef hash for tea
